Jolly, the firefighter dog

Jolly, the firefighter dog

Ages 3-5

In the quiet town of Howick lives a very special dog named Jolly. He’s a brave bloodhound who works alongside his best friend, Johan, at the fire station. Jolly is always ready to race to the rescue.

Jolly enjoys playing in the back yard of his boss, Johan’s home. They both are keen fire-fighters at Howick’s Fire Station. Jolly is a bloodhound and can sniff out any fire.

Johan throws him a tennis ball and then calls him to bring it back to him. Sometimes little Ethan runs and grabs the ball out of his mouth. He then wants to growl at him, but then suddenly remembers that it is wrong. He is a little boy and he doesn’t really want to hurt him.

As soon as he gets the ball back, he runs away and quickly hides it between his blankets in his bed.

Suddenly he hears the sharp whistle Johan is blowing.

This is the sign that he needs to run fast, jump onto the bakkie and then he must sit quietly until they reach the fire station. There is a fire somewhere.

Johan stops with screaming tyres at the fire station.Jolly jumps from the bakkie and then jumps onto the fire engine and sits on his own seat. The red fire engine’s siren sounds very loud while they are rushing to the scene of the fire.

Today there is a huge fire at a double story house with a thatched roof. Lightning has struck the roof and lit it up in flames. Jolly is a very brave dog and immediately runs into the burning house to see if there is any living thing.

He sniffs around and then realizes that there is a small baby in his bed on the top level of the house.

He keeps on barking to draw the attention of the firefighters, but nobody hears him.

He looks at the burning beams which are falling down around him.He now feels very anxious because nobody hears him.

He rushes up the burning stairs and pushes the door open where he finds the crying baby.

He grabs the baby by his shirt and pulls him from his bed.

The baby is quite heavy, but he decides that he now needs to hold on to save this baby.

Johan realizes that Jolly is not at his side therefore he quickly starts looking around to find him. He sees the dog on the burning staircase with something like a baby in his mouth. He runs with large strides up the stairs and grabs the baby from his mouth. He calls Jolly to follow him. Luckily, they were fast enough to get downstairs. They were barely downstairs, when the whole staircase tumbled down.

The other firefighters clap hands when the group steps out of the burning house. Jolly is the hero! Everyone wants to cuddle and stroke him, because he saved the baby from sure death!

The following Monday he received the most beautiful, golden medal for his heroic deed from the mayor of Howick!
