Lesedi waddles like a duck

Lesedi waddles like a duck

Ages 6-8

Lesedi is a bighearted little girl. At school she sometimes gets teased about the way she walks. One day, with the help of her teacher and sweets, she learns that kindness changes everything.

At the school all the toddlers run quickly to be in time for breakfast. They push and bump against one another and Miss Rita must make sure nobody gets hurt. They know this is not permitted but nobody listens!

Lesedi is always late, the tailender. She is very small and short for her age. The boys always bully her, and the teacher is desperate to get them to stop.

She often tells them one may not tease or mock a person about what they wearor what they look like. The most recent chapter in this story is that they make fun of the way Lesedi walks: “Lesedi waddles like a duck! Lesedi waddles like a duck!” they sing during playtime.

Teacher confers with the other teachers and asks their advice on what she can do to stop this. Miss Julia says one can maybe call all the boys to one side and tell them how sad they are making their little friend. Otherwise, she can bring a packet of sweets to school and let Lesedi hand them out to all the friends.

Today Lesedi sits aside and alone on the playground. She slowly eats her sandwiches, and she is on the verge of tears. Teacher sees this and goes to sit next to her. She holds her hand and tells her about the packet of sweets which she will bring to school the next day.

The next morning Lesedi is the first one at school. She is very excited. Before the teacher gives the sweets to her, she lets all the friends sit on the carpet.

“This morning, I want to tell you that one of our friends is feeling very sad. One must always remember that everybody dislikes it when someone says things which can make them sad. To mock someone with a song with ugly words in it causes that person to feel lonely and sad. Today Lesedi brought everybody a sweet to tell you that she also wants to be your friend. I want to ask you nicely to play with her and never ever again say such rude things to her.”

Kabelo and Jaco now feel terrible, because they were the ringleaders. The other friends look at them and then turn their faces away. Everybody now wants to be Lesedi’s friend. Lesedi eagerly hands out the sweets to the kids.

She smiles from ear to ear and has already forgotten about yesterday. Kabelo and Jaco apologize and give her a huge hug.

Teacher also feels happy and the day proceeds much better than yesterday. Everybody is happy and works together. All is well that ends well.
