Louw and the Car wreck

Louw and the Car wreck

Ages 6-8

Louw is fascinated by Daddy’s old car project! Every afternoon after school, he helps sand and dream. At nursery school, there’s another broken car — and Louw imagines what it could become.

Daddy is busy with a project which Louw regards as absolutely wonderful! He is repairing an old car. It’s an old car which he bought from another uncle. The paint is peeled; it doesn’t have any wheels and there are no seats and no engine in the car.

Louw can’t wait to get home from school in the afternoons to help his daddy. At his nursery school there is also an old smashed up red car in which all the little friends climb and clamber during playtime. Louw enjoys sitting and dreaming behind the steering wheel of the car. He then drives to incredible places which only he knows of.

His daddy allows him to do the sanding together with him. He takes the sanding paper which one must first put into water to sand the fenders of the car. One must work carefully otherwise it makes ugly marks.

He excitedly tells all his little friends about everything he and his daddy do. Then they play outside and he keeps on daydreaming. This afternoon they are going to town to buy putty to fill up all the dents of the car.

Daddy promises Louw that he will pay attention to the car wreck at the school as soon as his own little old car is fully repaired. Louw is now in another world. He starts dreaming about what the car at the school must look like. When he lies down on his little matrass for his afternoon nap, he dreams how he and Daddy are going to work on the wreck.

He can’t wait any longer for daddy’s car to be restored. Every afternoon he sands and works even harder together with Daddy, because this task must now be completed. In the afternoons they drive to scrapyards to buy some more parts for the little car. He enjoys this very much. Daddy also decided to buy a few parts for the wreck at school.

They see pretty seats which are not too expensive and buy them immediately. Louw can’t keep his excitement in check! Tomorrow he is going to tell all his friends about this find. That night he can scarcely sleep because of his excitement.

Early the next morning he jumps up cheerfully and dresses quickly. Daddy must take him to school early. He must tell all his friends that he and his daddy have already started to buy parts for the wreck. Teacher is as excited. The boys of the whole class decide that the car must be painted a bright blue. John says he will ask his daddy for wheels for the car. He saw four old tires lying in their yard.

“Louw, can you please come and help me to fit the tires of the car? It’s a huge job and only a hard-working little boy can help me,” says Daddy that afternoon after school. Louw jumps in and works during the whole afternoon together with his daddy. While working, he is dreaming the whole time about what his little car at school is going to look like. That evening he can scarcely sleep. He is very excited and can’t wait for them to start working on the wreck.

Louw and his little friends are dreaming huge dreams about how they are going to race in the new blue car. Teacher organizes for all the daddies to get together at school on Saturday afternoon to work on the wreck. The daddies decide that they are going to braai while working.

The little friends and their daddies worked very hard and in a few hours’ time the wreck is changed into a pretty bright blue car in which all the kids can play to their hearts’ content. Many hands make light work.
