Peter is the cutest little potato. He has freckles on his nose and cheeks; white hair which freely blows in the wind. His round ears look just like his grandfather’s.

Peter enjoys playing in the mud. His grandfather says: “Wholesomeness from the earth, that is what a potato is.”

Peter has a huge family. When they sit in their small mud house in the evenings, they chat about what happened to them during the day. Peter’s eldest sister, Penny, always has the most adventures to share.

“Today I lifted my little eyes above the ground and had a terrible fright!” She likes to exaggerate and to tell things in the superlative! “A bumble bee landed on the flowers of our plant! He was huge, yellow and very fat. He has a terrible sting and I was so afraid that he would sting me!”

“Oh, my dear child!” says Mommy in her calm voice. “Sometimes one must just understand what is really happening with our plant. The bumble bee sits on our beautiful light blue flowers to spread the pollen around. If the bumble bee doesn’t do this hard job, we will not be able to grow. Penny, he won’t do anything to you!”

“Lucy, what have you done today?” asks Mommy.

“Mommy, next to me Granny snored so loud that I thought there was a terrible problem. Luckily, Gramps softly touched her face and then she stopped.”

Every member of the Potato family has a story to tell. Peter is the little dreamer and sometimes tells the most priceless stories. This evening, he is very quiet as he is exhausted. Today his potato tummy has grown nicely because of all the food he took. His blue eyes feel scratchy and Willie Winkie’s sand quickly sends him off to the land of Nod.

“Come, Peter, I’m going to cover you with Granny’s lovely leaf blanket. You must have a wonderful dream and tomorrow you can tell us what happened during your day!” says Daddy.

His granny says:” Just add a bit of fennel and coriander to a potato and then he grows smartly and becomes very clever.”

Suddenly a deadly silence reigns in farmer Trichard’s potato land. All the potatoes are in dreamland. Tomorrow morning when the first sunrays touchthe land, there will again be a turmoil of activity: babbling, laughter and again plenty insects which will be doing an excellent job.
