The Hula-Hoop Competition
Leané is so excited to take six colourful hula-hoops to school. The teachers decide to use the hula-hoops for a special competition; the children can hardly wait.
Today Leané has six hula-hoops which she wants to take to school. She recently celebrated her birthday and Mommy bought hula-hoops for the kids to play with at her party. But Mommy is very tired of all the hoops lying around all over the house. ”Please take these hula-hoops to school and give them to Miss Misty. One of these days one of us will break a leg if they come in our way.”
Teacher is so grateful for receiving these hula-hoops. She immediately calls Aunty Sumoné who teaches Duplotots at the school. “Leané’s Mommy gave these six hoops to us, but I think they will be of better use at Duplotots.”
“This is a big present, thank you very much. We have a nice sporting day which we are planning for the Grade R’s. We only need one more item for the last competition and will be able to use these hoops.”
Aunty Sumoné calls her friend, Aunty Carla, and tells her about the wonderful present they received.
The next Saturday is the sporting day of the Grade R’s and the kids are so excited they nearly couldn’t sleep the previous evening. The girls can’t wait for the hoop competition to begin. The aunties demonstrated to them how to use the hoops. The one who swings the hoop around her body for the longest time will receive a lovely prize!
Everybody takes part in the different activities and eventually it is time for the hoop competition to begin. Teacher arranged for a certain song to be played and the girls must then take turns to swing the hoops around their bodies. This causes a lot of merriment and everybody cheers and encourages the girls.
Leané practiced very hard at home, because she is definitely going to win this competition. Her whole family cheers her on and she is finally one of two remaining girls. Zoey also practiced very hard, but she couldn’t make it in the last few minutes. Leané now swings her body with determination, because she realizes the prize is hers!
Teacher brings the big pink packet to the podium and gives it to her. She throws her arms around her mother’s neck and gives her a huge hug. “ Thank you for teaching me so nicely how to swing my body so swiftly.”
